NATO Tiger Meet 2014
Closest City/town: Varies
Spotter tickets: Yes
The NATO Tiger Meet is not an Air Show, it is an Air Force exercise organised by different NATO countries each year. This means that the event moves around between different NATO countries, from Norway in the north to Turkey in the south.
The Tiger Meet 2014 was held in Germany, at the Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51, based at Schleswig - Jagel in Germany.
This event is pretty much the closest you can get to a "Flying Circus" and if you are in to military aircraft painted in unique liveries, then this is the event for you!
Nations, Units and Squadrons compete in having the coolest/greatest/toughest livery and this is not a joking matter to these crews. Some nations in particular seems to go "all in" with both planes and crew being dressed for the occasion.
Due to these spectacular liveries, spotters and photographers started hanging around these events and it became so popular that they had to organize official Spotters Days, to try and control the crowds. As this is a military exercise, there are no display flights as you see at Air Shows so what you will get are take-offs (though they are not your every day "by the book" take-offs) and landings.
You will get two "photo opportunities" as they fly one sortie in the morning and one in the afternoon.
And since most fighter pilots seems to love attention and having their picture taken, there is a "drive by", where the planes pass (and halts) by the photographers for some close-up photography.
A word of advise thought... Get to the event early as this event is "ladders galore" at its worse. Those of you who frequent Air Shows know what I'm talking about, those of you who don't, well, you have to see it to believe it. Photographers bring ladders (and not just the short type) and they all go to the front of the public area, pretty much blocking the view for everybody else.
